Celebrity gardener shares six steps to a healthy lawn

Celebrity gardener Mark Cullen shared lawn and garden tips and secrets last week with a full house of County gardeners attending a special event hosted by Picton and Wellington Home Hardware stores.

Adam Busscher, Ted and Evan Nash present $1,100 to Linda Downey, of the Storehouse Food Bank in Wellington.

Proceeds of $1,100 raised during the special lawn and garden night and barbecue at the Wellington arena were presented to Storehouse Food Bank this week.
Cullen focused on top quality garden tools and supplies stocked exclusively at Home Hardware as he took his audience on a photographic tour of his 10-acre garden and favourite gardens in the world.
He spoke about front gardens, the importance of parkland and trees, bees and the move to green walls, following the success of green roof projects.
He shared tips on how not to be a slave to the garden and for use right now, gave six steps to a great lawn.
1. Rake your lawn – lightly. Remove winter debris in early spring and get the grass blades standing up on end, allowing air to circulate through the crown of the grass plants.
2. Cut your lawn high. The higher the grass blades are, the deeper the roots will be. Deep roots equals a drough resistant, healthy looking lawn.
3. Use a mulching mower. Return the natural, nitrogen rich goodness of cut grass blades back to the root zone of your lawn.
4. Fertilize three times a year with Golfgreen. The slow release ingredient delivers what lawns crave the most, at a time when it is needed most. Rainfall, rising temperatures and microbial activity in the soil activates the slow release prills in each bag.
5. Less more, less often. In late spring, apply up to 1 and 1/2 inches of water to your lawn as it dries out, but only once a week. This will drive grass roots deeper, which is helpful during drought conditions. During a drought, do not water at all. Let your lawn go dormant; it will revive in August as temperatures drop and morning dew becomes heavy.
6. Maintain your lawn mower. Sharpening and balancing your mower blades will keep your lawn healthier. Change the oil regularly, and winterize and store it properly. Whenever possible, use a battery powered, electric or manual mower.
