Chief reports grass fire challenge access was due to mud

Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue responded to a large grass fire at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 11.
Fire Chief Chad Brown reports about five acres was found burning in a field off Highway 49.
Firefighters from Stations 1, Picton and 4, Sophiasburgh, took more than three hours to extinguish the fire.
“Firefighters were challenged to access the fire due to the lack of frost in the fields and muddy conditions,” said Brown.
He reminds residents to ensure they activate their burn permit before any burning occurs.
“I am also reminding everyone that we are not monitoring off-season weather conditions related to burn bans, so anyone burning must ensure they understand the limitations and conditions attached to their permit when burning occurs,” added Brown.
“Damage from open-air fires is preventable, so enforcement actions may be taken when emergency response is required due to these fires. Residents are responsible for the response costs specified in the Fee for Service Bylaw, which can be expensive.”
