County groups receive gifts of funding

The Prince Edward County Community Foundation today announced $15,000 in grants funding six projects, including a girls leadership program, a family food program, women’s security, youth employment, education and athletics.

“We are very grateful for the support of the donors who have made these grants possible. It’s what community foundations are designed to do,” says Foundation Chair Joan Pennefather. “The Community Fund received approximately $45,000 in requests for funding this year, and while we wish we could have supported them all, we are grateful to be able to make a difference in this way.”

Recipients include women fleeing abusive situations, and the volunteers who support them, at Alternatives for Women; the Hub Child and Family Centre’s Healthy Food Healthy Families program, which teaches young families basic food skills and preparation and provides meals; Prince Edward County Minor Hockey Association, and additional ice user groups who have been working toward purchasing rink dividers to ensure more children are able to participate in various programs.

Recipients also include The Young Company, a program initiated by Festival Players for youth interested in the performing arts. A grant will also go to Girls Rock-It, a healthy living and peer support program of the Recreation Outreach Centre for girls in Grades 7 and 8.
