County welcomes new CAO

Merlin J. Dewing, the County's new Chief Administrative Officer

Prince Edward County mayor Peter Mertens announced Merlin J. Dewing will be the County’s new Chief Administrative Officer.
“I am very happy to welcome Mr. Dewing to this important leadership role and look forward to working with him to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of our organization,” said Mertens. “Mr. Dewing has stellar credentials and brings the experience, energy and insight that is critical to lead the administration through the challenges and opportunities of the future.”
Dewing begins duties Nov. 1. He has served as Chief Administrative Officer for the single-tier municipality of Sioux Lookout since 2005. He brings 36 years of municipal experience, the most recent 22 years as a Municipal Chief Administrative Officer.
“With an impressive and extensive array of varied professional and leadership training, coupled with his much sought after generalist background in the municipal environment, Mr. Dewing is ideally suited to lead, mentor and cultivate the County’s administration to the needed levels of excellence to meet the challenging demands currently facing the municipality,” said Mertens.
“I am thrilled to be given this opportunity to utilize my extensive municipal experience as a Chief Administrative Officer to lead Prince Edward County’s administrative team,” said Dewing. “It is my personal commitment and goal to create an environment of synergy development by working closely with council, staff, the business community and internal as well as external stakeholders, with a view to enabling lasting partnerships in sustainable and progressive community enrichment initiatives.”
The selection of a preferred candidate was carried out by a Recruitment Committee of Council composed of mayor Mertens and councillors Heather Campbell, Jim Dunlop, Keith MacDonald and Terry Shortt. The committee, supported by Organization Consulting Limited,  interviewed 11
candidates over three months. The formal appointment bylaw is to be passed at a special meeting of council today.
