E-scooters: Where can you ride in PEC?

Prince Edward OPP is reminding residents to understand local regulations before operating electric scooters (e-scooters) and similar motorized devices.

Ontario’s e-scooter pilot program requires municipalities to opt-in to establish local regulations governing their use.

“Prince Edward County has not adopted the pilot program and currently restricts the operation of all motorized scooters on public roads and sidewalks,” said Alexandre Lebel, PEC OPP Community Engagement/Media Officer.

“Under Prince Edward County bylaw 1733-2006, motorized scooters are prohibited on sidewalks, streets, and highways in Prince Edward County. The bylaw defines a motorized scooter as a two-wheeled type skateboard driven by motor power.

He notes in some circumstances, e-scooters may be classified as motor vehicles under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act and could require licence plates, insurance, a permit, and a properly licensed driver. Individuals operating these devices may be subject to enforcement action, including charges, fines, vehicle impoundment, and other penalties where applicable.

“Before purchasing or operating an e-scooter, Prince Edward County residents should be aware that these devices may only be operated on private property and are not permitted on public roads, sidewalks, or highways.
