Eating well will begin early for HUB children

Eating well will begin at an early age for children at the HUB Child Care Centre in Picton.
The centre has partnered with County Chef Michael Hoy to cook lunches and snacks aimed at encouraging and inspiring lifelong skills and habits for healthy eating.

“The HUB is trying to provide the youngest members of our community with the best start possible,” says Tamara Kleinschmidt, executive director. “We are thrilled to be able to bring Chef Hoy’s skills and experience to the children at our Child Care Centre.”

“I am excited to bring my approach to simple, healthy fresh food to the children every day at the HUB,” says Chef Michael Hoy. “Together, the HUB and I hope to create an environment where the children will develop lifelong healthy eating habits.”

The addition of Chef Ho adds another dimension to the “Growing Healthy Families” strategy undertaken by the HUB board of directors.  The initiative joins the Healthy Food Healthy Families Program, the children’s HUB Cooking Club for 6-12 year olds  and the development of the mutli-faceted outdoor learning centre focused on growing fresh fruit and vegetables on the grounds surrounding the HUB building in Picton.

The HUB Child & Family Centre is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the families of the County with quality early learning and child care services. It has been in operation since 1989 and is focused on programming for children 0-12 years old.

“Together, the HUB and I hope to create an environment where the children will develop lifelong healthy eating habits.”

A great program for children, I applaud. However, I did not read anything about children learning about adding recipes and dishes containing beans, lentils and pulses. All these are rich proteins, in nutrients, vitamins, all amino acids, enzymes and fiber. And each is a protein that can replace MEAT at a fraction of the cost without the harmful acidic affects that meat creates in the body.

What a great place to learn about how to live a healthy life on a sparse budget through habit. I do hope their education does include this knowledge. What a difference to a child’s habits of eating and a parent’s life who can afford to feed their family without the expense of meat when money is short.

Bread and cake recipes that contains black beans. Salads that contain chick peas and pinto beans. Lentil soups full of protein and tastes yummy without meat. I hope this will eventually happen for these children. It is time.

A great expectation for healthy children. If only it could happen. If only health Canada would allow the interchange under Canada’s Food Guide in this situation where the Government is involved. Education is the key to better choices.
