Educator of the Year nominations due April 24

EdWeeklogo_000Nominations are now being accepted for the Educator of the Year. Students, colleagues, parents/guardians, community partners and the public are invited to submit award nominations for any person who has made an outstanding contribution to education in Hastings and/or Prince Edward counties.

Last year, PECI business and math teacher Rob Garden became the youngest, at age 30, recipient ever of the prestigious 45-year-old honour, also known as the Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award.

The 2013 Educator of the Year will be presented with the Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award at a public reception on Monday, May 6, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Education Centre, 156 Ann Street, Belleville, Ontario.

This year marks the 47th anniversary of the Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award. Past recipients have included school administrators, teachers, educational assistants, support staff and volunteers.

NOMINATION GUIDELINES
Nominations are due by Wednesday, April 24, 2013 and should be sent to the Educator of the Year Award Committee, attention to June Hagerman, Committee Chair, c/o Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, 156 Ann Street, Belleville, Ontario K8N 3L3. Electronic submissions, in PDF format, can be emailed to jhagerman@hpedsb.on.ca. All supporting documentation must be part of the PDF.
The nominee must be active in education during the current school year.
Nominations should be submitted on the nomination form. A copy can also be obtained by contacting June Hagerman at  jhagerman@hpedsb.on.ca or by calling 613.966.1170 or 1.800.267.4350.

The Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award Committee is composed of representatives from:
Albert College
Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board
Loyalist College of Applied Arts and Technology
Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte
Quinte Area Christian Schools
Sir James Whitney School

Sir Mackenzie Bowell (1823 – 1917) was a strong supporter of education and an active promoter of Hastings County. Bowell was elected to the Belleville Board of Education and served as chairperson of that board from 1856 to 1867. He served as editor and proprietor of The Intelligencer for many years and helped form the Belleville Board of Trade (Chamber of Commerce) in 1865. In his editorials, he stressed education as a key to development and championed the growth of Belleville and Hastings County as a whole. Politically, he distinguished himself as a federal cabinet member, a senator, and Canada’s fifth prime minister (1894–1896).
