Expect drilling, blasting and sirens on Millennium Trail in Wellington

Drilling and blasting operations will begin again on the Millennium Trail in Wellington starting Sept. 8. between at 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday – Friday.

Drilling and blasting allows the contractors to excavate rock and install the new water and sanitary infrastructure at the proper depth.

The operations will take place on the section of the trail that is closed between Belleville Street and Consecon Street.

Three long sirens will be sounded to warn of imminent blast.

Drilling and blasting operations are expected to take place over 45 business days. If drilling and blasting is required beyond that period, the municipality will provide an update to the community.

These operations are required as part of the Wellington trunk watermain and sanitary sewer construction project.

The new trunk watermain meets the water distribution and storage needs of the existing residents and future development within the Wellington urban serviced area. The new sewer trunks are also to accommodate the anticipated increase in wastewater flows from new developments.

The new trunks will be constructed from the location of the existing water and wastewater treatments plants to the east along Wellington Main Street, north on Cleminson Street, east along the Millennium Trail and then connect to the new water tower on Belleville Street.

The project also includes a new sanitary pumping station located on the Millennium Trail near the intersection with West Street. This pumping station is a component of the new trunk sanitary sewer.

The municipality expects the majority of the project to be completed by the end of 2025 with some trail restoration happening in the spring of 2026.
