Five County students’ achievements honoured at Albert College graduation

Five County residents were among 40 students – representing 11 countries – who graduated from Albert College.

Prince Edward County residents Juliane Burns, Jessica Maurice, Emilie Moffat, Spencer Russell and Nathan Shubert were honoured at the Belleville private school’s 157th convocation June 14.

Ninety per cent of the graduating class achieved an average of 80 per cent or higher in six Grade 12 subjects earning them Ontario Scholar status.  Forty per cent also graduated as Albert College Scholars having achieved an average of 90 per cent or higher in six Grade 12 subjects.

The Head of School, Keith Stansfield, fondly addressed the students as family: “One of the things I believe is critical to being able to muster up the strength to carry on when things are tough, is the knowledge that you are not alone,” he said. “This is where I hope you will fall back on your own family, but also the family you have developed while you have been here.”

Julianne Burns has been a student at Albert College for eight years and graduated as an Ontario Scholar. From Wellington, Julianne travelled to both India and Ghana with the community service program at Albert and was a member of the Senior Girls’ volleyball team. This fall, Julianne will study Life Sciences at McMaster University.

From Picton, Jessica Maurice also graduated as an Ontario Scholar. Spending four years at Albert helped Jessica realize, “the value of having many relationships with a wide variety of people.” Jessica served as the Grad Class Vice President this year, and was the manager of the U20 Mens’ Volleyball and Senior Boys Basketball Teams. She kept herself very busy volunteering as the Head Resource Centre Monitor and was Captain of the Yearbook Club. Jessica will attend Bishop’s University in the fall to study Business.

Emilie Moffatt, from Consecon,  has been a student at Albert College for six years and graduated as an Ontario Scholar with Distinction. While at Albert, Emilie developed a love of theatre and was active within the school’s dramatic productions which included two leading roles in “The Lion, The Witch and Wardrobe” and “The Drowsy Chaperone.” Emilie is thankful for the time and opportunities she gained at Albert College, specifically, the chance to participate in the Canadian International Schools Drama Festival for the past three years. Emily will continue her studies in Theatre at Concordia University in September.

Spencer Russell, of Wellington,  graduated from Albert College as an Ontario Scholar and Albert College Scholar with Distinction. In addition, he was recognized for his outstanding contribution and achievement in the subject of Philosophy. Having attended Albert College for three years, Spencer was a valuable member of the technical team for the school’s dramatic productions and travelled to India with the community service trip. Spencer well surpassed the minimum 40 hours of recommended community service hours by achieving more than 250 hours. In recognition of his work, Spencer was awarded with an Albert College Active Citizenship A pin. This fall, Spencer will study Political Science at the University of Toronto, Trinity College.

Nathan Shubert came to Albert College from Picton and attended for nine years. He graduated as an Ontario Scholar with Distinction. Nathan participated in a variety of activities and was active in athletics as a member of the cross country, track and field and swim teams. In addition, he served on the Camp Committee, was awarded the Most Improved Performer Award for his role in the dramatic production, “The Laramie Project” and earned more than 100 community service hours.

    This is very nice. But wouldn’t students such as these have added a great deal to our county schools? Anyone checked out how low the high school enrollment is lately—with concomittant loss of programme. No kids, no courses.
