‘Fundly’ set up for Wellington family facing third time they have lost everything

When fire was consuming the home of Wellington family Adnan Mustafa and Suhaila El Husein, 14-year-old Ahmad showed courage and determination, getting his sister and baby brother out of the house. The parents and all five children all just made it out with their lives Sunday night. They didn’t even have time to put on their shoes.

This is the third time the family has lost everything.

War in Syria destroyed their first home. They spent five years in Lebanon as refugees before they left everything behind again to come to Canada, sponsored and supported by a group of volunteers in Prince Edward County.

Since 2016, these open-hearted new Canadians have embraced their new home. The children have settled into school and sports. The community had rallied to help the family attain specialized equipment for a son with special needs – custom-built bed, chairs and van – all of which have now been lost or damaged in the fire.

Adnan and Suhaila are also hard working entrepreneurs. They launched a successful Middle Eastern food business, Papa Ghanoush and Momma Hummus. Their prepared food is on supermarket shelves across the region, and they are familiar faces at special events and farmers’ markets throughout the summer & fall. Their commercial kitchen also was destroyed by the fire, interrupting the family’s source of income just as their busiest season is getting under way.

All money raised through this campaign will go directly to the family to help them find a new home and get back on their feet. They have proven themselves to be resilient, and with the help of the community of friends, supporters and relatives, no doubt they will overcome this terrible setback.
