Glenwood becomes fourth cemetery in Canada to provide green burials

Glenwood Cemetery has become officially certified by The Green Burial Society of Canada and is now one of just four cemeteries in Canada and one of the two in Ontario approved for green burials.

“Green Burial is a statement of personal values for those who seek to minimize their impact on the local and global environment,” said Helma Oonk, Glenwood’s manager and cemeterian. “For people who are mindful of the cyclical nature of life, green burial is a spiritually fulfilling alternative to conventional burial or cremation. It is an environmentally sensitive practice: the body is returned to the earth to decompose naturally and contribute to new life.”

A separate section at Glenwood has been developed to offer green burials in a natural forest specially designed to permit human remains to be returned to the earth as naturally as possible.

The Green Burial Society of Canada explains human remains are prepared without embalming. Other methods used to prepare for viewing include refrigeration, environmentally sensitive soaps and lotions and disinfection agents.

The remains are wrapped in a shroud made of biodegradable fibres then buried directly; or placed into a casket or container also made of fully biodegradable materials.

Following a green burial, and allowance of time for grave settling, the grave is planed with locally indigenous plants using a groundcover, shrubs and trees.

Visitation to the graves is managed through placement of walking paths and benches. Zones may be purposed for the green burial of cremated remains using surface or sub-surface disposition methods.
