Imagine it, then have the library help you 3D build it

The Makerspace at the Picton Branch Library is a hub of creative activity. Every day, people use the equipment to bring their ideas to life.
One of the most popular pieces of equipment is the 3D printer. The library has made a 3D printer available for more than 10 years now, and the types of questions we hear are definitely evolving. When the first machine was put on display, people were curious about what it was and we regularly heard questions from people skeptical about its usefulness.
We introduced people to the possibility, explaining how the machine uses biodegradable plastic to create objects. We demonstrated practical applications, from making quick prototypes of design concepts to downloading and printing items that meet specific needs.
Now, a decade later, while we do hear general questions about the purpose of 3D printing, we are increasingly hearing from people who have their own ideas about what they would like to make.
Projects vary – from creative little decorative objects to practical items like custom hooks and items custom designed to solve particular challenges. Recently someone printed a highly specialized wrench they needed for a plumbing project and another downloaded the file needed to make an ash scoop for a fireplace. It’s exciting to hear how people are finding creative ways to put this technology to use.
If you are interested in printing your own files, we charge a fee to cover the cost of supplies used. Library tech help staff are happy to assist you and answer any questions you may have. You can reach them at (613) 476-5962 or email techhelp@peclibrary.org
