Let Justice Prevail at World Day of Prayer

Let Justice Prevail will theme this year’s World Day of Prayer at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2 – around the world, and at St. Mary Magdalene Anglican Church in Picton.

On Friday, March 2, the women of Malaysia invited the world to join with them in the World Day of Prayer celebration praying under the theme: Let Justice Prevail. The women of Malaysia name fair and just governance as the basis for peace and harmony in the social order, saying: “In the midst of such diversity, tolerance and harmony, fair and just governance for all is vital. It is our prayer that all races, ethnic groups and religions will work together for religious harmony and a just and integral development for everyone.”
World Day of Prayer, co-ordinated by the Women’s Inter-Church Council, is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together every year on the first Friday of March to observe a common day of prayer.
“Through World Day of Prayer, we affirm our faith in Jesus Christ and become aware of the whole world,” says Marie Connor, an organizer of the Picton event. “We are enriched by the faith experience of Christians of other countries and cultures; share the burdens of other people and pray with them and for them. We become aware of our own talents and use them in the service of God’s world. Prayer and action are inseparable and both have immeasurable influence in the world.”
The women of Malaysia who prepared this year’s worship service cultivate an inner orientation to their context with their opening greeting “Selamat Datang” which means peace and welcome. There is an accompanying gesture of placing palms together with a slight bow as a sign of respect. This greeting is a daily reminder that harmony as a people is rooted in peace and welcome. To be able to live together in harmony is a blessing from God for which the people of Malaysia give thanks.
