More winter weather on the way

snowplow2The first weekend of the new year is expected to bring more winter weather warnings.

Hwy 401 was closed for most of New Year’s Day due to collisions involving dozens of vehicles driving through blowing snow on slick roads. Snow squall warnings had been issued for New Year’s eve and day.

More than 25 vehicles were involved in collisions near Odessa, closing the highway for about four hours. Multiple vehicle accidents were also reported on Hwy 401 west of the County.
OPP tweeted black ice warnings and asked drivers to slow down.  Snow squalls created up to 15cm of snow in areas east of the County.

Environment Canada has issued a weather statement for a significant winter storm of mixed precipitation for the weekend.
“Travel will likely be difficult this weekend considering the changes in the weather during the storm,” the statement says. “The timing and amount of precipitation is still somewhat uncertain at this time.”

Most areas of southern Ontario are expected to see snow Saturday, changing over to ice or freezing rain and rain overnight into Sunday.
