Free garbage bags curbside ends Feb. 20

The County’s bag tag relief program ends Feb. 20 and residents will now be required to tag all garbage bags placed at curbside for collection on or after Febr. 21.

During the recent COVID-19 restrictions, the municipality allowed one un-tagged bag per household per week in an effort to reduce residents’ trips outside the home.

JAN 10: To help people stay at home during the rapid spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant, and avoid unnecessary trips to landfill and transfer sites, the County is allowing residents to put out one untagged bag of garbage per week during the Step 2 of the provincial Roadmap to Reopening. This program will be in place starting Thursday, Jan. 6 and will continue until at least Thursday, Jan. 27.

The two-bag limit per week for curbside collection remains in place. Bag tags can be purchased at select locations or by mail with a cheque payable to The County of Prince Edward to: Edward Building, Suite 103, 280 Picton Main Street, Picton ON, KOK 2T0.

The one untagged bag allowance does not apply to garbage brought to landfill and transfer sites. Regular fees will still apply to these bags.

The municipality is urging essential trips only to limit traffic at the landfill and transfer sites and to ensure social distancing can be maintained.

Visitors must remain in their vehicle unless otherwise directed, wear a face mask, and are asked to bring small bills or exact change to limit the cash handling by the attendants. Visitors are also asked to sort their recycling before coming to the sites to avoid creating unnecessary crowds at the bins.

The public is reminded to refrain from visiting a landfill or transfer site if they are currently self-isolating, experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, have been diagnosed with COVID-19, or live with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Curbside garbage, green bin, and recycling collection are continuing on the normal schedule at this time.
