Spot repair of roads and culvert cuts are to be handled by Kiley Paving Ltd., as the lone submission of a $603,893 tender bid for 2023.
Council, at Tuesday night’s meeting, also approved staff to be directed to prepare a multi-year plan for road surface spot repairs for review as part of the 2024 operating budget discussions.
Staff explained the one bid received was over budget, but reduced with changes to the scope of work. The list of repair areas was produced through factors of need and future rehabilitation plans. Areas not included will continue to receive routine patching.
Staff also noted contractors who have a substantial amount of larger scale work are often not interested in spot repair programs and just one or sometimes two generally make tender bids.
In March, council voted to increase this year’s road surface maintenance budget by $340,000; $300,000 of which was allocated to the spot repair and $40,000 to shoulder maintenance. The addition of these funds to the original spot repair budget of $322,00 created a $622,000 budget.
