New scams cashing in on victims

Scammers are taking advantage of holiday goodwill in attempts to cash in on potential victims.

The Prince Edward County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is warning the public after reports of new scam techniques being used in the area.

Prince Edward OPP Cst. Patrick Menard states one scheme involves the victim receiving an email asking for a favor from a friend or relative.

“The victim is asked to purchase gift cards and scratch off the back of the card to reveal the pin number. Photos of the back of the card are then asked to be forwarded to the friend or family member showing the pin number. This would allow the scam artist to make online purchases using the pin number at the victims cost.”

Another email scam being reported is an invitation to the “Law Court” by a judge due to a crime commitment.

“There is a case file number and date attached to the federal court subpoena,” he said. “Subpoenas are never emailed to anyone and a signature is required for proof of delivery. The email also includes several spelling errors which is a quick indication that the document is false.”

Menard recommends caution at all times with these and all other scams.

“Take your time; do not make any decisions until you are certain it is not a scam. Talk with family and friends to verify if the request is valid.”
