No more free lunch for County staff in new collective agreement

Prince Edward County Council approved a three-year collective agreement with CUPE Local 2275 – applying to 102 inside and outside staff, including roads crews, maintenance workers, water operators, and inside office staff.
“The 2012 corporate realignment left staff with a feeling of uncertainty and ambiguity,” said mayor Peter Mertens. “The approval of this agreement creates the stability to move forward with positive outcomes and the goal of becoming an efficient and effective organization.”
The new contract addresses a number of issues, including the elimination of a one-hour paid lunch to inside workers valued at $235,000. Inside employees will now work one extra hour per day (at no cost to the municipality), and public office hours may be extended.
The settlement offers the employees a one-time hourly increase of $0.40 and a 2 per cent annual wage increase.
Over the term of the contract, both the County and CUPE Local 2275 agreed to discuss the short-term disability plan, with a view to reduce direct and indirect costs to the municipality.
The new collective agreement will be in place from April 1, 2013 until March 31, 2016 and a bylaw adopted by Prince Edward County Council confirmed the terms.

I don’t believe the workers gave up $2,300 or that there is an actual monetary saving. I think they just work an additional hour and have an unpaid lunch.
It’s hard to remove items from contracts that are established over time. Kudos to both parties in coming up with a solution. The $235k is 1% on your tax bill.
It is also $2,300 per employee per year, so it is not an insignificant pay cut.
Why would they ever of had a free lunch?
