The opening week of hockey season started on a high point for the PECI Girl’s players who won their first game of the season 10-2 versus the Nicholson Crusaders Wednesday.

The game started out with the Panthers coming in hard. There were plenty of chances, but they couldn’t bury the puck into the back of net. The Panthers dominated throughout the first period, but both teams were unable to score a goal.

The second period started off a little rough for the Panthers when the Crusaders scored the game’s first goal. That didn’t last long as Brooke Jackson scored the first goal for the Panthers 11 seconds after the Crusaders’ hit the net. The Panthers dominated the rest of the second, with Jackson scoring three more and Sydney Davies scoring a goal.

The Panthers didn’t let up during the third period despite the second Crusaders goal happening early. Jackson got two more goals to give her the most goals of the game with six. Davies scored another goal while Kim Pothier and Tynika Williams each scored to bring the final to 10-2. Recognition also goes to Jackson with one assist, Davies one assist, Chloe Marshall with four assists, Sarah Young with one assist and Sarah Juby with one assist.

Thursday, the Panthers suffered their first loss of the season 4-1 against the Moira Trojans.

For the first period both teams were equal competitors with chances to score. The first to the back of the net were the Trojans with 11 seconds left in the period.

The second period was more of a struggle for Panthers determined to tie the game. The second period stayed 1-0 until the Trojans scored another goal with a minute and half left in the second period.

The Panthers started to lose steam in the third period with the Trojans scoring a goal early and another goal three minutes later. The Panthers were determined to score, and with five minutes left in the third, Kendra Marion scored the only goal with assists from Davies and Jackson.

The Panthers are looking forward to their first home game of the season against the Nicholson Crusaders Tuesday in Picton.
