PEC Relay for Life raises $191,651 and still counting

The PEC Relay For Life raised $191,651.59 as of Saturday morning and the total will continue to rise as post event donations and pledges to come in.
“We had set as our goal to raise over $190,000 and we have achieved it, said co-chair Jim Vince. “What makes this event so special is the way it rallies our community. There were 69 teams on Friday night including 16 teams from PECI and more than 650 team participants, 130 survivors, 100 volunteers and close to 100 performers making this one of the biggest annual events in the County.”
The PECI entrepreneurship class, responsible for all the Relay activities and challenges, presented the Team Spirit Award to perennial relayers Black Crick Chicks and Friends.
Top fundraising honours went to Charlene Inch $2,314; Neil Thompson, $2,087 and Tina Rutgers, $1976.
Top Team Fundraisers were County Cancer Crusaders $8970. Silver and Bronze Award winners were: Wellington Lakers $6100; Black Crick Chicks & Friends $5432; Tough As Nails $5230; Cooper’s Troopers $5201; Roadrunners $5151; Tiger Lillies $5000 and 4H4U4EVER $5000.
There were 24 Dream Teams who raised more than $3,000 and sold 30 luminaries.
“The students of PECI entered 15 teams in Relay for Life, in addition to playing a key role in the organization of the event,” noted Ron Broadbridge, event co-chair. “Scotiabank Picton was the Event Sponsor, Picton Home Hardware was the Survivor Sponsor, Curves was the Luminary Sponsor and the Rotary Club of Picton was the Fight Back Sponsor.
“County Council entered a “Hobbits of Shire Hall” in this year’s Relay and Wellington On The Lake also helped make a huge contribution to the success of the event. Thank you to all of the supporting sponsors, media sponsors, food and beverage sponsors and the County of Prince Edward for the site and facilities.”

The “fight back” bell is rung every hour at Picton’s Relay for Life event. Wendy Culmer was first to ring in, after telling more than 600 participants how she fought cancer – twice – and celebrates, remembers and fights back.

As well as celebrating survivors and fighting back, Relay for Life participants remember loved ones.
