PECI Panther Girls Hockey starts season with a win

By Mike Pothier
PECI Panthers didn’t take long to continue last year’s winning ways this season by downing the Centennial Secondary School Chargers 5-1 at the girl’s hockey home opener Thursday.

Abby Terpstra and Sam Ward both had a pair while Alex Staley rounded out the goals.

Terpstra added a pair with Ward’s single assist while winger Celina Fox had a fantastic game by setting up three goals. Taylor Snider was solid between the pipes as the game only opened up in the third period with four unanswered Panther goals.

Laurie Spencer, head coach and Athletic Director at PECI was happy with her squad both on and off the ice.

“Great excitement demonstrated from the players, fellow students and the community about the upcoming season. Our OFSAA run last season was truly amazing experience that the players will remember as a career highlight.”

This year’s team is using lessons learned and experienced gained from last season to improve this year. Spencer said the player make up is different this year.

“The make up of the team is very different. Now away at college are key players Cailey Jones, Amber Miller and Kassidie Wood. The team will be very defensive being captained by Alex Staley who is included in the eight natural defense and four forwards.

“This has created an odd dilemma for me and our coaching staff – three defense will have to make the move to forward. We will have to rely on the leadership of Sam Ward and Abby Terpstra to deliver on the offensive power.”

The other change this season is the depth on the bench. Only two lines which isn’t the depth they had last year on their OFSAA run, but will provide opportunity for the girls to refine individual skills as they will all be seeing plenty of ice time.

League play consists of five home games and four away games. New this season will be the Panthers competing in a Napanee Tournament Dec. 10.

Next home game is against Centre Hastings Secondary School Centurions, Thursday Dec. 3rd, at the Picton Arena.
