PECI students become the teachers of indigenous studies

High school students became the teachers Wednesday as they took turns reading indigenous children’s books to students at Queen Elizabeth Public School.
The PECI students are studying Indigenous issues and literature in Matthew Sheahan’s Contemporary Aboriginal Voices class and traveled to Queen Elizabeth to work with Victoria Carroll’s Grade 4/5 class.
The students took turns reading to groups of children and facilitating a pre-reading and post-reading discussion around the content and themes of the books.
“The project came about as a way to further include indigenous themes, history and literature into the everyday classroom, which is a mandate and goal of the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board,” said Sheahan.
The PECI students brought over books that dealt with history, culture, mythology and legends, identity and residential schools.
“The conversation was rich, and the groups of students can’t wait to do something like this again in the future,” he added.
