Pirates’ Cole Bolton pitches in on Canadian Junior Men’s Softball World Championship Team

Picton Pirates’ Cole Bolton will take a break from the rink to pitch and play third base when he represents Canada at the World Championships Nov. 1-10th in Parana, Argentina.
Hard work and determination have always been key attributes at the rink and on the pitching mound for Bolton, of Flinton. Never one to fear anyone on the ice or in the batter’s box, Bolton was named to Canada’s Junior Softball Team which will play in the International Softball Federation (ISF) IX Junior Men’s World Championships.
The Picton Pirates’ General Manager and Head Coach Ryan Woodward said the organization is proud of Bolton’s achievement and confident he will take great pride in any role he would be asked to play on Team Canada.
“Like all multi-talented elite athletes, Cole is a competitor and natural leader.  He has won major championships in both hockey and baseball; he knows what it takes to win and to be part of a team.  We couldn’t be more proud of him and we hope he brings home the gold,” said Woodward.
“Team Canada has been scouting major provincial and national tournaments for three years,” said Bolton. “They composed a list of 30 athletes to bring together for a main selection camp in August where they would make cuts and select a final team of 17 players to represent the country at the World Championships in Argentina.”
Bolton turned 18 on the day the team was scheduled to leave for Argentina.
“I think they will be counting on me to play a versatile role. They will want me to bring lots of speed to the base paths, pitch whenever needed, and play sound defensively on third base.”
Bolton, a fixture in the local pitching circles over the years has been a dominant right-handed pitcher for the Napanee Express.  He said the roller coaster of emotion turned to overwhelming exhilaration when he finally received the news he had been waiting for from Team Canada.
“Obviously there was a lot of excitement. It’s a huge honour to be able to represent your country on the international stage so when the phone call came through it was a pretty happy day in Flinton.”
For Bolton, the opportunity is a dream come true.  He was quick to mention some very important and influential people that helped him realize his goal.
“I need to thank my family for their support and the coaches that have coached me through my 10 years of playing softball in Napanee.  My dad (Mike Bolton) has coached me for 10 years and Lester Brown has helped me for a good majority of them as well.  Softball Napanee has also always been a great supporter of the sport giving many of us opportunities to excel across the nation.  Even our local community at home in Flinton has given me overwhelming encouragement over the years.”
