Police warn merchants to beware “group” theft schemes

The Ontario Provincial Police East Region is warning merchants to watch for groups of people visiting businesses and working together to steal items, or scoping out the business to plan a future theft.
The OPP reports groups of 3-10 people – men and women often wearing large, baggy clothing – are traveling in vans and larger cars. Once in the business, one or more will distract the clerk/cashier, while the others steal goods or make their way into offices.
Police report the culprits will avoid the front of the store/cash as they leave with articles hidden by their clothing and that some may be struggling to walk as they leave.
If anyone has information about these types of thefts, they are asked to call their local police immediately (Prince Edward OPP at 476-2151) or the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
