A province-wide strike by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) has impacted the construction of the new water tower in Wellington.

IUOE went on strike as of Monday, May 2. All work at the Wellington water tower has stopped as a result.

“Construction on the foundation of the water tower cannot proceed as the operators of the drill machinery are members of the IUOE,” explains Mark Kerr, the County’s Communications and Media Coordinator.

He states County staff are monitoring the situation and will provide further updates as they become available.

Construction began early April at the northeast corner of the Belleville Street and First Avenue intersection.

It was tentatively scheduled for completion in the spring of 2023. The new elevated water tank is expected to provide the recommended pressures for the existing system, and for the planned future developments over the next 20 years.
