Santa Claus comes to a snowy Picton parade

Story and photos by Sharon Harrison
For the second time in as many days, Santa Claus put in an appearance in the County, this time in Picton, in what is clearly a busy time of year for the chap in the red suit.

Santa also generously brought some North Pole snow with him, just for the occasion Sunday afternoon, the snow-rain mix and gusty winds making it feel quite wintry.

Yet, miraculously, the precipitation stopped, the wind eased, and the sun (almost) came out just in time for the parade, where, once it was all done, the wind picked up and the rain returned.

The cool weather and the grey day didn’t deter spectators from gathering along the entire length of a closed Picton Main Street – from McFarland Drive in the east, all the way to Lake Street to the west.

It was a fairly typical as far as parades go, led by the colour party, with the mandatory pipe band, this time welcoming a new addition with the Henderson Highlanders Pipeband and Dancers (which included a bag pipe playing Grinch).

There was representation from local businesses and organizations, local sports teams, the Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron, and also spotted were Bay of Quinte MP Chris Malette, Bay of Quinte MPP Tyler Allsopp, as well as County Mayor Steve Ferguson and several councillors.

The Prince Edward Family Health Team was there, and the Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital Foundation brought along a reminder of a new hospital under construction with its creative float.

Horseback riders joined in, there was some miniature horses, a few dogs too.

The famous Cherry Valley Fraser family automobile, and its many occupants, also made it to another County parade.

And, of course, Santa Claus himself, the last float to arrive from the North Pole, was eagerly and patiently awaited by many little ones.

For those in need of more Santa sightings, he is expected to visit the County’s western corner for the Consecon Santa parade Sunday, Dec. 7 at 1 p.m.
