Seniors’ stories to go on-air thanks to federal grant

Bay of Quinte MP Neil Ellis with 99.3’s Ian Batt, Sharon Lafferty Roberts and Pat Larkin, during Tuesday’s announcement.

Seniors will have their voices heard, and their stories on-air, thanks to a federal government grant.

Bay of Quinte MP Neil Ellis was at 99.3 County FM in Picton Tuesday afternoon to present the $23,766 gift from the New Horizons for Seniors Program.

The funds will be used to help finance new mobile broadcasting equipment to be taken on the road to produce senior-related historic segments in the community.

Ellis said the “station’s work will engage seniors and benefit many community members, creating a lasting impact on the community for future generations.”

Pat Larkin, the station’s on air production leader, said the mobile equipment will help the station expand its role in the community.

“This represents a commitment to improving our communication and ability to engage the seniors in our community in a very forth-right fashion,” said Larkin. “The station is volunteer driven (three full-time equivalent and about 85 volunteers) and this will be a full station operation.”

Ellis said the New Horizons for Seniors Program is providing about $35 million this year to 1,850 community projects across Canada receiving approval from a pool of about 5,000 applicants.
