Skyway Bridge closed night of March 15-16

UPDATE: The closure originally scheduled for March 10-11 has been changed to March 15-16.

A full closure of the Bay of Quinte Skyway Bridge on County Road 49 is planned, weather permitting, for 9 pm on Tuesday, March 10 until 6 am on Wednesday, March 11.

This closure is intended for the implementation of staging configuration for Segment E work, which will consist of installing temporary traffic signals, temporary concrete barriers, temporary energy attenuators, delineators and placing temporary pavement markings.

As work begins for another season, single lane closures can be expected from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, controlled by traffic control barrels and automated flaggers.

Construction operations for 2022 of Highway 49 at the Bay of Quinte Skyway Bridge are to begin Feb. 22. Single lane traffic closures will start on a day-to-day basis.

The work planned for 2022 by Aecon Construction includes superstructure work on the south span of the bridge, replacement of the south abutment, rehabilitation of piers underneath the bridge and structural steel repairs.

The bridge is an 850m long, high-level bridge carrying two lanes of Highway 49 traffic over the Bay of Quinte. The bridge was constructed circa 1967 and is in need of major repairs. The work will include the complete replacement of the steel girders and deck, rehabilitation of the piers, and reconstruction of the abutments. The bridge deck will be widened slightly and will include 1.5 m shoulders on each side.

Work began in 2018 with preparations for each segment of the bridge to be replaced over five years.
