Skyway Bridge overnight closure Aug. 24 – 25

Kiersten Cairns, granddaughter of Jack and Jeanette Minaker, formerly of Maple Avenue, Picton, shares two photographs from their archive, showing the July 1965 beginnings of the original build of the Skyway Bridge linking Prince Edward County and Deseronto. The rebuilding of the 850m long bridge continues these 58 years later as the ministry of transportation’s contractor GIP (formerly Aecon) began rehabilitation in 2018 and is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2024.

A full night closure of the Bay of Quinte Skyway Bridge is planned for 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24 until 6 a.m. Friday, Aug. 25. In the case of continued poor weather, the closure may be rescheduled for the same times Monday, Aug. 28 to Tuesday, Aug. 29.

This closure is intended for relocating temporary concrete barriers, temporary energy attenuators, placing temporary pavement markings, and flipping traffic to the east side of the bridge.

No traffic will be permitted to pass over the bridge during the closure. Emergency vehicles will use established protocols.

The bridge is an 850m long, high-level bridge carrying two lanes of Highway 49 traffic over the Bay of Quinte. The bridge was constructed circa 1967 and is in need of major repairs. The work will include the complete replacement of the steel girders and deck, rehabilitation of the piers, and reconstruction of the abutments. The bridge deck will be widened slightly and will include 1.5 m shoulders on each side.

Work began in 2018 with preparations for each segment of the bridge to be replaced over five years.
