Snowmobile safety week a reminder to get home safely

As winter recreation reaches its peak, Snowmobile Safety Week serves as a reminder for local riders and visitors to operate snowmobiles safely, responsibly, and within the law.

“Snowmobiling is a great way to enjoy winter in Prince Edward County,” said PEC OPP Community Safety Officer Nicole Cordingley. “Make safety your top priority, so every ride ends with a safe return home.”

In Ontario, so far this year, nine snowmobilers have been killed while driving their sleds. The OPP reports speed is often a factor.

Cordingley advises that with the popular Millennium trail and rural roadways throughout the County attracting snowmobilers each season, proper preparation, training, and respect for trail rules and private property help ensure every ride in Prince Edward County is a safe one.

She recommends enthusiasts following these key reminders:

Before You Ride
Carry a valid driver’s licence or MSVOL
Have proof of insurance and registration
Display a valid trail permit when required
Wear an approved helmet (drivers, passengers, and anyone in towed devices)
Check trail, weather, and ice conditions before heading out
Tell someone your route and expected return time

While Riding
Stay on designated trails
Obey posted signs and come to a full stop before crossing roads
Never ride on private property without permission
Adjust speed to conditions – maximum 50 km/h on trails
Zero tolerance for impaired riding

Millennium Trail – Winter Use Reminders
Motorized use is restricted to snowmobiles, farm tractors, and animal husbandry vehicles
ATVs and dirt bikes are not permitted during winter conditions
Snowmobile speed limits apply
The trail is not maintained for pedestrian use in winter; icy sections may be present
Parking lots and access points are not plowed
Winter restrictions remain until snow has melted and trail conditions stabilize
