Taste of Egypt comes to the County

Gayle-GibsonIn a first-time appearance in Prince Edward County, Egyptologist Gayle Gibson, retired just this year from the Royal Ontario Museum, will present a special “Taste of Ancient Egypt” history and travel talk.

Gibson was among those responsible for correctly identifying Pharaoh Ramses I among the mysterious mummies at the old Niagara Falls museum and getting him on the road home to Luxor.

The afternoon in the County will focus on new Egyptian sites, history and myths, Egyptology tidbits and travel tips followed by a wine tasting. Gibson will also talk about Ontario’s contributions to Egyptology and share news on her own unique Egypt tour slated for September 2016.

As an Egyptologist and teacher at the ROM for more than 20 years, Gibson is considered a treasure of the museum herself, and continues to work as a Research Associate.

Her appearance in the region is significant, as eastern Ontario (Northumberland county) was the birthplace of the ROM’s first Egypt collections, including the iconic ROM mummy, Antjau, who was procured by ROM founder Charles Currelly from a Cobourg dealer in the early 20th century. Currelly himself retired in Port Hope where he lived until his death in the late 1950s.

“I am most excited to speak on ancient Egypt in this storied region and at the beautiful Grange vineyard, ”says Gibson. “In this talk, I’ll share my enthusiasm for Canada’s proud part in Egyptology – while I also give an idea of what you can actually experience if you go to the country today.”

The event is Sunday, Sept. 27 2-4pm at The Grange Winery. Tickets $15 in advance or $20 at the door.
