Two canoeists rescued after capsizing

Two people are alive thanks to life jackets and emergency services.

Prince Edward OPP and emergency services responded to a marine incident on East Lake after a canoe capsized on Saturday, Oct. 17 at approximately 12:45 p.m. leaving two occupants in the water.

“With assistance from Prince Edward Fire and Rescue, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), both occupants were safely removed from the water,” reports Nicole Cordingley, PEC OPP Media Relations and Community Safety Officer.

“Fortunately, both occupants were wearing life jackets when their canoe capsized, helping keep them afloat until they could be rescued. With water temperatures continuing to drop this time of year, the risk of cold-water shock and hypothermia increases, making it even more important to wear a properly fitted life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD) whenever you are on the water. A life jacket can make the difference between life and death in an emergency.”

While this incident had a positive outcome, Cordingley notes it serves as an important reminder that emergencies on the water can happen unexpectedly.

“This is a welcome reminder that taking a simple precaution can save a life. Always wear your life jacket when on the water.”
