Unofficial end of summer as students return to school

The unofficial end of summer unfolds Wednesday morning as students return to school.

This year, there are several significant changes to codes of conduct in all Ontario schools. At Hastings Prince Edward District School Board schools, students will not be allowed to use mobile devices, including cell phones, tablets, smart watches, etc., in the classroom. Grades 7-12 will only use devices in the classroom if directly approved by an educator for instructional purposes. In addition, social media sites will also be banned from all school networks and devices.

Tobacco, nicotine and electronic cigarettes are not allowed at school, and that these items will be confiscated and disposed of if found with a student on school grounds.

Ontario Provincial Police remind the public to expect more traffic, buses and children on the roads. Officers are focused on strict enforcement of traffic safety and ask the public to obey speed limits and stay alert, especially in school and playground zones and to avoid using cell phones and other distractions while driving.

When a school bus is flashing its alternating red lights, traffic in both directions must stop and not pass. Failure to do so could result in a fine. First offence $400 to $2000 and six demerit points. Each following offence $1000 to $4000 and six demerit points and possible jail time (up to six months).
