Volunteers bolster Picton’s food bank

Long time volunteers Seona Halsey and Sandra Norval will take on volunteer duties at the Picton United Church County Food Bank in a move to answer government demands for increased accountability.

Halsey, as secretary, and Norval, as interim treasurer, join Pat Romkey who has been the volunteer food bank director since 2005.

“During the past few years, government has challenged not-for-profits and charitable organizations with ever increasing accountability through increased legislation and regulations,” says Rev. Phil Hobbs, minister at Picton United. “As a result, we have strengthened the role of the Mission & Service Committee in the oversight of the food bank.   As we face even greater pressures of accountability and growth in program initiatives to improve services for our clientele, it has been apparent that we need to move forward to augment the support structure. We are confident that our attention to governance and sector best practices will assist the operations of the Picton United Church County Food Bank while ensuring that our responsibilities to the general public and legislation are met.”

The food bank, for the past 26 years, has been responsible to the Board of Picton United Church through the Mission & Service Committee.
Assistance is given to more than 100 families each month.

“We have benefited in this work through the broad support of other congregations, service organizations, the general public and our dedicated PUCCFB volunteers,” said Hobbs. “We extend heartfelt thanks to the numerous volunteers who put in many hours each month. We also thank our partners which include individuals, community service organizations, other congregations and businesses. Together we will continue to provide needed assistance to those members of the community who are less fortunate.”

The Food Bank is open Fridays from 8a.m.-noon and can be reached by phone at 613-476-8516. Donations of non-perishable items: Peanut butter, powdered milk, canned goods, vegetables, meat, pastas, toilet sundries and diapers are always welcome.
