It takes 200 seedlings to replicate benefits of one mature tree

To the Editor:
Trees are one of our greatest protections against the changes in weather caused by climate change. They create shade, provide oxygen, produce better soil, remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and safeguard our water table.
We should be planting more trees rather than cutting them down, especially endangered species like Butternut (for a new development in Fawcettville and elsewhere). We need ways to protect the trees we have and raise funds for new trees to be planted but it takes over 200 seedlings to replicate the benefits of one mature tree.
The Emerald Ash Borer has devasted Ash trees. As we drive through the countryside we see their skeletons everywhere. We can’t afford to lose any more trees – along the Millenium Trail or to housing. We need them. They are important.
Farmers and land owners with forests should be given a tax credit or other compensation by the municipality for the trees they preserve. Trees are key to mitigating climate change, preserving biodiversity and are a legacy to our grandchildren. Let’s protect them.
Sincerely,
Myrna Wood on behalf of the Prince Edward County Field Naturalists
