Exit Through the Gift Shop will premier in Picton Thursday, July 8, a first outside of Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver.
The film features street artists and their art as viewed by one of the greatest street artists currently working, Bansky. This is his first film.
Local songwriter/poet Andrew McLuhan approached Michael Reason of the Regent Theatre to bring the independent film to Picton. Despite rave reviews from the Sundance Film Festival and film critics from around the world, Reason wondered if Picton was ready for a film about street art. He put the ball in Andrew’s court and told him to show him there was an interest. If Andrew could show him, he would reconsider.
“My reason to bring the movie to Picton was mostly selfish,” said Andrew McLuhan. “I just wanted to see the movie.”
Andrew started a Facebook group which now has more than 120 members. The interest in the film was clear and Michael Reason went looking for an available copy of the film.
“There are only three copies available in Canada,” he said “As soon as it closes in Toronto we will have it in little Picton.”
The movie is not just about street art, it’s also funny, and for the Picton debut, it’s not just a movie. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for the wine-bar and local deejay Lone Ronin and artist Hri Neil will be performing before and after the movie.
“This is the place to be on July the 8th,” said Reason. “It’s going to be happening. We are selling tickets like hotcakes. This is the kind of thing the Regent wants to promote in the community. We can do this kind of thing, unlike the big theatres. The Regent Theatre wants to participate with the artistic community. We would like to see several events like this a year.
Tickets, $5, are on sale at the Regent Box Office.
