Queen Elizabeth, Canada’s head of state, has died; new King visited the County in 2016

A new photographic portrait of Her Majesty The Queen, wearing the maple leaf brooch inherited from her mother, was released Canada Day 2017 to mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

Buckingham Palace has announced the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, today, at Balmoral Castle.

Canada’s head of state, 96, and longest-reigning British monarch, (celebrating 70 years this year) was said to have died peacefully. The new head of state, King Charles, 73, and Queen Consort Camilla, remain in Scotland with family members and are to return to London tomorrow.

Elizabeth became Queen in 1952, at age 25, following the death of her father.

“It is with the heaviest of hearts to learn of the passing of our Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” said Prince Edward County Mayor Steve Ferguson, this afternoon.

He noted the County sends heartfelt condolences to the members of the Royal family during this difficult time.

“This is also a heartbreaking loss for the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Her Majesty will be greatly missed as a constant and steadying presence for our Commonwealth.”

The County has lowered flags across the community to mourn the death of Her Majesty.

As a Princess, she visited the Royal Canadian Air Force base in Trenton where she unveiled the memorial gates erected to commemorate the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan that operated during the Second World War. Prince Edward County children were invited.

Upon the Queen’s death, Charles, eldest of her four children, inherited the sovereign title and job as head of the Commonwealth. Charles and Camilla visited Prince Edward County in June 2017.
