Roundabout 30 days away to approval to begin construction in spring 2027

The long-awaited roundabout at Highway 62 and County Road 1 (Schoharie) is a 30-day comment period away from being considered ready to proceed to construction.
The $7-8 million construction (not including the cost of acquiring land from some of the adjoining private property owners) is estimated to begin in the spring of 2027 and take about 120 day to complete.
The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has completed a detail design and Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) study.
MTO’s consultant, Stantec Consulting Ltd., has prepared a design and construction report (DCR) to summarize the refined recommended plan, construction staging, and environmental impacts and protection and mitigation measures.
The DCR is available for a 30-day public comment period to Oct. 26. The DCR can be accessed at the project website at hwy62pec1.ca or can be reviewed in person at the Picton library (208 Picton Main St.) and the Bloomfield library (300 Bloomfield Main St.).
Upon completion of the DCR review period, the project will be considered to have met the requirements of the Class EA and will proceed to construction. Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2027 subject to approvals.

I too, am concerned with the high level of commercial trucks using side roads and secondary roads, unnecessarily. When I inquired to the county, I was told the same – these trucks have no business using side streets, especially in the older neighbourhoods where streets are narrow and heavy pedestrian traffic.
So I guess I’m wondering, who are we building this traffic circle for? Is is the careless drivers who are bad drivers, or the commercial vehicles, or both? I think if we ENFORCE the rules, we wouldn’t have such a high rate of accidents. People need to read the signs and drive safely. And, this traffic circle won’t stop the commercial vehicles using inappropriate streets and roads – We Need Enforcement. IMO.
Will it be large enough to manage the heavy commercial trucks? Currently I see many transports and heavy commercial vehicles on side roads and rural roads; the Traffic Advisory Committee has shared their concerns about this commercial traffic which is supposed to only be using main routes. I think the commercial trucks choose to avoid the current roundabout at hwy 33 and cty rd 1. This is destroying our roads and extremely unsafe.
It’s hard to believe that it would cost 7 – 8 Million dollars to construct a roundabout!
