Second round of community grants awarded in new partnership

In conjunction with The County Community Foundation (CCF), the municipality awarded eight community recipients with grants under $5,000.

The Municipal Community Grants Program funding is aimed at improving the well-being and quality of life of the community and its residents through financial assistance to non-profit community based organizations. This was the second to be administered by the CCF this year. Ten recipients were announced in January.

Overall, the program has awarded $22,380 in in-kind support, and $15,625 in cash to 18 not-for-profit groups and organizations this year.

“We are very happy with the results,” said Mayor Robert Quaiff. “All of the recipients to date have been incredibly deserving of our support. I encourage all of our volunteer groups to keep an eye out for next year’s program.”

The CCF administers two streams of grant applications: grants up to $5,000 in cash and in-kind; and in-kind grants of $1,000 or less. It also tops up municipal funding by an additional 25 per cent. The municipality continues to manage applications for grants over $5,000.

“As with other grant programs which we manage, these grants demonstrate the dedication and care of so many PEC volunteers and residents,” said Joan Pennefather, president CCF.

The application period for the second round of funding closed March 3. The program is intended for non-profit community-based organizations that provide programs and services in the areas of: arts, culture, heritage, recreation, environment, health and human services.

Funding recipients:

Human and Health Services Grants
Alternatives for Women in Prince Edward County (Project: Enhanced Community Outreach
Activities) – up to $350 in-kind for Town Hall Rental and $500 cash for materials for
outreach activities

Food to Share (Project: Food to Share Cooking Events and Fundraising Events) – up to $2,938
in-kind for use of kitchen spaces for food preparation at community centres and Crystal
Palace; $1,500 cash for expenses

Community Living Prince Edward (Project: Community Resource Fair) – up to $847.50 in-kind
toward the rental cost of the Prince Edward Community Centre for the resource fair

The Prince Edward Community Care for Seniors Association (Project: Moving Further Into the
Community) – up to $350 toward the rental of community town halls

Prince Edward District Women’s Institute (Project: Arts and Craft Sale) – up to $5,000 in-kind
toward the rental and staff assistance at the Prince Edward County Community Centre, Crystal
Palace, and the Fairgrounds

Arts / Heritage Grants
Baxter Arts Centre (Project: Baxter Studio School Video) – $789 cash

The Department of Illumination (Project: The Firelight Lantern Festival) $2,493 in-kind for
spaces for workshops and for events including the rental of community town halls and the
Crystal Palace and $500 cash toward project supplies

Environment Grants
Picton Business Improvement Association (Project: Streetscape Enhancement Project) $1,000
cash for the purchase of hanging baskets that retain water and low water requirements
